Do you know that feeling? You're visiting grandma and there it is again: that little glass of tokkelroom with a spoon next to it. That delicious Dutch classic, just as creamy and rich as advocaat, but with a vanilla flavour that immediately takes you back to the past. And then there's eggnog - the American/British answer to our tokkelroom. A winter drink that fills houses with the smell of warm spices and cosiness during the holidays.
And then we thought: why not combine the best of both worlds? Imagine the creamy texture of our trusted tokkelroom, but with the delicious wintery spice mix of eggnog. The result? The perfect winter spoon drink! In this article I will take you into the world of tokkelroom , advocaat and eggnog, and share a brand new recipe with you: Toknog , an edible egg liqueur that tastes like a warm winter hug.
What is tokkelroom and what makes it different?
Tokkelroom is an egg liqueur that is thick in texture, similar to advocaat. It is made from eggs, sugar and spirits, usually brandy. The taste is mild and sweet, with a subtle vanilla note. Traditionally, tokkelroom is served in a glass and eaten with a spoon, often with a dollop of whipped cream as garnish.
Advocaat and tokkelroom are very similar, but tokkelroom is often a bit milder in taste. Unlike liquid egg liqueurs such as eggnog, tokkelroom is not drunk but eaten, making it more of a dessert than a drink.

Toknog recipe
With this new recipe we make an edible whipped cream that has the same consistency as eggnog, but with the rich, spicy flavor of eggnog. It's perfect for the holidays and will definitely impress your guests!
Ingredients
For ± 500 ml, which is about 10 servings
- 5 egg yolks
- 200 grams of sugar
- 1 bag of vanilla sugar (8 grams)
- 250 ml brandy or rum
- 100 ml whipped cream
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Preparation method
- Beat the egg yolks together with the sugar, vanilla sugar and salt in a bowl until light and fluffy.
- Heat the brandy or rum in a saucepan over low heat, without letting it boil.
- Slowly add the warm alcohol to the egg mixture, stirring constantly to prevent curdling.
- Mix the whipped cream, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves into the egg mixture. Keep beating until everything is nicely mixed.
- Thicken the mixture by heating it in a bain-marie. Place a bowl over a pan of simmering water and continue whisking until the whipped cream thickens, similar to the consistency of eggnog.
- Let the spicy whipped cream cool and pour it into a clean glass bottle or jar. Put it in the fridge for at least a few hours to firm up.
Serve that Toknog
Toknog is delicious served pure in a small glass with a spoon. Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream, some cinnamon sugar, sprinkles or make a cozy snowman. It is also great as a topping on ice cream, or to use as a filling in desserts such as cake or tiramisu.
