They're mysterious, elegant, and surrounded by the wildest stories. Black cats have held a special place in our culture for centuries, though unfortunately, not always a positive one. But let's be honest: anyone who's ever fallen in love with such a dark beauty knows the superstition is completely baseless. It's time to put these beautiful cats in the spotlight and dispel persistent myths.

From witch's cat to lucky charm

Black cats and superstition go hand in hand. In the Middle Ages, they were associated with witchcraft and bad luck—a reputation they still carry today. But did you know that in many cultures, a black cat actually brings good luck? In Japan, a black cat symbolizes prosperity, in Scotland, a black cat on your doorstep means wealth is on its way, and in England, brides sometimes give each other a black cat as a gift for a happy marriage.

Sailors also liked to take a black cat on board to ensure a safe journey. So, the way these animals are viewed varies considerably from culture to culture. One thing is certain: anyone who owns a black cat knows they bring a great deal of love.

More difficult to adopt (and that is so unfair)

This is where things get serious. Black cats in shelters wait longer for a new home, on average, than cats of other colors. The reasons? Superstition still plays a role, but there's also something called "black cat syndrome." Black cats don't look as good in photos; their facial expressions are harder to read. On social media, people scroll past them more quickly. A shame, because behind that dark fur, the sweetest personalities hide.

Thinking about getting a cat? Give that black furry friend at the shelter a chance. You're guaranteed to get a loyal companion in return.

That fur isn't always pitch black

Fun fact: a "black" cat isn't always truly black. Many black cats have underlying tabby markings that become visible in the sun. And some black kittens fade to chocolate brown, rust brown, or even grayish brown as they age. This is due to a genetic trait where pigment breaks down under the influence of sunlight and food.

Our own strange little creature, Nori, is the perfect example. When we got her as a kitten, she was practically black—now she's chocolate brown with gray hues. And still the most beautiful cat ever, if I do say so myself. She's a cross between a Ragdoll and a British Longhair, with fur as fluffy as a rabbit. Her official name? Nori Rainpipe, the creativity of a child who gets to name their first pet. Our lucky charm prefers to sleep in fresh boxes or among our clothes (never in the beautiful baskets we bought, of course), gives paws, retrieves, walks perfectly on a leash, and loves nothing more than to lie limply on her back on my husband's lap. A true Ragdoll, in other words. She's not a perfect cat—she gets quite dramatic when the teenager gets too close and poops half her body outside the litter box—but I wouldn't trade her for anything.

Why Black Cats Make the Best Pets

Okay, maybe we're biased, but black cats really do have something special. They tend to have a calmer temperament and are known for being real cuddle bugs. Plus, they suit any interior. That sleek black fur on your beige sofa? Iconic. And yes, you see the fur everywhere, but that's just part of it.

Black cats are also photogenic – you just need to find the right lighting. 💡 Tip: photograph them in natural light, preferably with a bright background. Those mysterious eyes will really stand out.
