When it's cold outside, it's very tempting to let yourself be carried away by the winter atmosphere. You're looking for coziness and warmth, so you immediately pull out the thickest sweater from the closet. Dutch winters aren't that cold, so you'll probably be sitting with a pile of sweat on your forehead within a few hours. Sound familiar? In this article you can read how you should dress in winter.

Layers are the solution

Okay, putting on a thick sweater and not worrying about it won’t help. So what will? To really get through the winter well, you’ll need to use layers. This means that you start with a thin base layer, and slowly build up from there. First something thin, then a sweater, and then a jacket over that if you have to go outside. If you unexpectedly get warm while you’re in the office, you can always take off a layer.

Choose the right coat

Not every coat is suitable for winter. So, before winter starts, start looking for nice winter coats, gentlemen ! If you still have to buy one by the time you need it, it is often too late. A good winter coat should not only be beautiful, but also practical. That means a warm hood for when it rains or snows, and pockets that fit all your stuff. Make sure the coat is spacious enough, so that multiple layers of clothing can fit underneath. Although it is of course nice to stand out, it is not very practical to go for a very special winter coat. The idea is that your coat still matches the rest of your wardrobe!

Everything on your hands and head

If you are going to brave the cold, a winter coat is not enough. In really cold weather you also want to make sure you wear gloves, a scarf and a hat. Especially if you are outside a lot, for example because you have to walk or cycle to work, good winter accessories are invaluable. The only disadvantage is that it is a bit inconvenient to have all that clothing with you, especially if you are not used to it.

Making a good outfit

Now that you know exactly what you need to have in your closet before winter comes, the trick is to combine it all until you end up with a functional outfit. Pay particular attention to colors and patterns. There are many different types of sweaters for men these days : the time of only having to choose between a black or blue sweater is really over! Keep in mind that wearing two different patterns is often a risk, and it is better to combine one plain garment with one pattern. Furthermore, some colors go better together than others. See this as an opportunity to experiment and discover what you like.
