My journey from fast fashion to a capsule wardrobe began a few years ago, when I became increasingly aware of the impact of my consumption habits. Like many, I used to be a big fan of fast fashion, blind to the consequences. I enjoyed the constant stream of new trends and cheap, fashionable clothes. But over time, I started to wonder about the true cost of this endless cycle of buying and throwing away.

I decided to change course and switch to a more sustainable, thoughtful way of dressing. It was a process of reflection and conscious choice, not always easy. But I am now very happy with this choice.

In this story I take you on my personal journey - from slavish follower of fast fashion to conscious consumer with a capsule wardrobe. Hopefully my experience story inspires you to think about your own clothing consumption. Read Esther's story here.

The awareness

It started with a documentary about the fashion industry that opened my eyes to the ethical and ecological problems of fast fashion. I discovered how the clothes I wore were often produced under appalling conditions, causing enormous environmental damage. This realization made me think about my own role in this system.

In addition, I noticed that my closet was full of clothes that I hardly wore. Despite the abundance, I often felt like I had nothing to wear. This frustrated me and led me to the concept of a capsule wardrobe.

The transition to a capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist approach to fashion, where you own a limited number of versatile pieces that you can easily mix and match. The idea is to invest in quality over quantity and opt for timeless pieces that will last.

My first step was to sort out my wardrobe. I got rid of everything I didn’t wear anymore or didn’t really make me happy. This was a liberating process; it not only gave me more space, but also a clearer picture of my personal style. Then I started building my capsule wardrobe.

The core of my capsule wardrobe

I decided to invest in a few quality basics that I could easily mix and match. This included a pair of well-fitting jeans, a black blazer, a few plain tees, and a classic trench coat. I opted for neutral colors and timeless designs that never go out of style. By investing in quality, I knew that these pieces would last for years, rather than being worn out after one season.

The benefits of a capsule wardrobe

Since switching to a capsule wardrobe, I’ve noticed that I spend a lot less time and money shopping. I feel more satisfied with my clothing choices and always have something to wear that feels and looks good. Plus, I now wear pieces that I really like and that reflect my personal style.

This transition has not only changed my view on fashion, but also my lifestyle. I have become more conscious, not only in terms of clothing, but also in other aspects of my life. I think more carefully about my purchases and choose more sustainable options.
