Some books stay with you. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is one such book. For over 35 years, people around the world have been turning to this story about dreams, travel, and listening to their heart. Sounds vague? Maybe a little. But there's a reason this book reached number one in 74 countries and has sold over 150 million copies. Time for a (re)discovery (of my personal favorite, Mariko).
What is The Alchemist about?
The story follows Santiago, a young shepherd from Andalusia. He has a recurring dream about a treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. Instead of ignoring that dream (as most of us would), Santiago decides to leave everything behind and set out to find it.
What follows is a journey through Morocco and the Sahara, during which he meets all sorts of people: a mysterious king, a crystal merchant, an English alchemist-in-training, and finally the alchemist himself. Each of them teaches him something about life, about courage, and about following your "Personal Legend"—your personal life mission.
Why does this book touch so many people?
Bookshelves are full of writings about The Alchemist. Fans call it life-changing, critics sometimes find it a bit simplistic. But perhaps that's precisely its strength: Coelho doesn't write complicated philosophical treatises. He tells a story that feels like a fairy tale for adults.
The message is clear: listen to your heart, dare to dream, and know that the universe conspires to help you if you truly want something. Cheesy? Yes. But also exactly what you sometimes need on a weeknight when life feels too busy and full.
The book is a quick read in a few evenings. Perfect for curling up on the couch with a cup of tea, phone to the side. A moment of being offline, a break from the daily chaos.

What can you learn from it?
The Alchemist is full of quotes you could easily paste onto a mood board. A few that stick:
- " When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it. " – The book's essence in one sentence.
- " It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting. " – A nice reminder that having dreams is valuable, even if you don't (yet) achieve them.
- " People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of. " – In other words: it is never too late.
Big words, yes. But sometimes you need them.
