Sunday is Father's Day. Don't have a present yet? Don't stress! Because with this last minute tip you will score points with the sweetest father (or husband) in the world - and it's not that difficult. What do you need? A few simple ingredients and a big portion of love. We're going to make a real English breakfast!
A breakfast with character
Whenever we are in Newcastle – and that is quite often – we always stop at The Cloister Café, right next to the beautiful St Mary's Cathedral. One of those old-fashioned cosy places where the smell of fried bacon and toast greets you on the pavement. And breakfast there? A treat that even the toughest guy will be silent for. So why not bring that feeling home on Father's Day?
No joke, The Cloister Café is truly my happy place.
What belongs on the board?
A traditional English breakfast is rich, warm and comforting. Perfect to start a Father's Day. Here's what you'll need, exactly as pictured:
- 2 well cooked sausages (chipolata's will do)
- 2 slices of bacon (nice and crispy)
- 1 scrambled or fried egg (however he likes it best)
- A generous scoop of baked beans (white beans in tomato sauce)
- Fried mushrooms
- A grilled tomato (fry briefly with the mushrooms, don't make it too difficult :))
- Toast with butter and jam
- Ketchup and brown sauce on the side (optional)
Serve all this on a nice plate, give dad a (Guinness) beer and Bob's your uncle .

Done in a jiffy, so cozy
Or make a pot of strong tea or fresh coffee, make the tray pretty with a napkin and maybe a handwritten card. You will see: the effect is great. A father who wakes up to the smell of sausages and toast? That is guaranteed a smile at the first bite.
More than food
A breakfast like this is more than just a plate of food. It is a moment of attention, of being together. And secretly also a little bit of England in your own kitchen. And let's be honest, that is much nicer than socks?!
Are you going to make this English breakfast for Father's Day? Let us know in the comments, we're curious!
