The short answer? Yes, absolutely! And the great thing is: it can even be more relaxing than driving a regular car. No joke. Take this family with three young children for example. Instead of sighing at every charging stop, they turned them into little adventures. While their car was “charging”, they would have a picnic, kick a ball around or just stretch their legs. The journey itself became a party.
From charging stop to charging stop: a new way of traveling
Electric cars need to recharge on the road, just as you take a break to eat or stretch your legs. Modern cars can often travel more than 300 kilometers before needing to recharge. And during that time, you'll be ready for a break too.
By planning smartly you can stop at nice places: a playground, a park or a roadside restaurant with a terrace. The children happy, you happy, and the electric car full of energy again.
Three useful tips for a great holiday with your electric car
1 - Use a route app that takes charging into account
There are special apps (such as 'A Better Routeplanner', 'PlugShare' or 'Chargemap') that show exactly where you can stop to charge and how long it will take. The ANWB also has a very handy Routeplanner for the EV . This way you will never be faced with surprises.
2 - Choose countries where electric driving is already well regulated
Countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, France, but also Austria and Scandinavia are well equipped with fast chargers along highways and tourist routes. Charging points at cafes, picnic areas or tourist attractions are no longer an exception. This way you can relax and enjoy yourself on the road. Holiday parks and hotels also often have charging points.
3 - Avoid busy times at charging points
Holiday charging between 12–2pm or right after work, such as around 5–6pm, can mean a queue at the charging station. Tip: plan your breaks smartly for less busy times, such as just after the morning rush hour or around dinner times. Then you often have the charging station almost to yourself.
City trips ? You are welcome with an electric car
More and more European cities have environmental zones where you are no longer allowed to enter with polluting cars. Good news: with an electric car you are often allowed to enter. Think of cities like Amsterdam, Paris or Milan. So do you want to spend a day in the city during your holiday? With your electric car you are welcome and environmentally friendly.
So… is it possible to go on holiday with an electric car?
Definitely! With a little preparation your trip will be even more fun. No rush, no stress, but time for each other along the way, good food, playing or just resting. Recharging will not be a hassle, but a break to enjoy.
