Sometimes a series can touch you so much that you can't stop thinking about it for days. Do you know that feeling? That every character feels like an old acquaintance and you would like to watch their story endlessly? That's exactly the feeling I got when I watched 'One Day' on Netflix . A year later, because it was new last year, but now the series seems to really catch on because of Leo's new film. But more about that later. Late to the party or not, it is a real must-see, from the first episode the series completely sucks you into this beautiful story about love, friendship and all the winding roads that life brings.
What makes this series so special is the way the story unfolds. We follow Emma and Dexter on the same day - July 15 - through different years. It is like leafing through a photo album full of beautiful memories. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, but always sincere and recognizable.
From Book to Series: Third Time's the Charm
David Nicholls' beloved novel One Day was adapted into a film starring Anne Hathaway in 2011. But honestly? The film pales in comparison to this Netflix series that exceeds all expectations. Over 14 episodes, we get the chance to truly fall in love with Emma and Dexter, as we follow them year after year from that first day in 1988.
Magical Duo: Emma & Dexter
The chemistry between leads Ambika Mod (Emma) and Leo Woodall (Dexter) is off the screen! Mod perfectly brings Emma’s sharp wit and hidden insecurities to life, while Woodall steals your heart as the charming but broken Dexter. Their dynamic feels so natural, you’ll forget you’re watching actors.
Does the name Leo Woodall remind you of anything? That's because he's currently in a lot of shows; The White Lotus season 2, Prime Target on Apple and he also plays Brigdet's toyboy in the new Bridget Jones movie. The lesser known actress Ambika Mod is a real hit in my opinion. When you compare the movie and the show, it all fits so much better now.
More than just romance
While the love story is central, 'One Day' also touches on deeper themes. Career choices, mental health, family relationships and personal growth are beautifully woven into the story. It makes the series so much richer than a standard romance series. Furthermore, everything is beautifully shot in beautiful locations in Edinburgh, London and Greece. Arthur's Seat is now definitely on my to-do list.
Why this series will touch you
The magic of 'One Day' is in the little moments. A stolen glance, an unspoken feeling, a missed opportunity - it's all so recognizably human. The series perfectly captures how relationships evolve over time, how people grow (or don't), and how life sometimes has different plans than we do.
This series won't let you go. You'll find yourself thinking about your own life, relationships and the 'what if' moments we all experience. It's a series that captures your heart and makes you reflect on your own path - just what you need sometimes during a quiet weekend at home.
This is the trailer for the 2011 film. See my point?!
Perfect for your binge-watching weekend
With the grey weather as the perfect excuse, this is your ideal series to dive into. The episodes are perfectly dosed (about 30 minutes each) and the story keeps you captivated with 'what happens next year?'. The 80s and 90s setting is also nostalgic and stylishly designed, complete with a recognizable soundtrack that will make you giggle regularly.
Make it a real moment for yourself. Put on your tracksuit, curl up on your couch and make sure you have a bowl of popcorn. This series deserves your undivided attention.
