Matcha is a Japanese green powdered tea that is traditionally grown and processed. Unlike regular green tea, where you let the leaves steep and then remove them, matcha is a whole leaf, ground into a bright green powder. This gives matcha a higher concentration of antioxidants, caffeine and amino acids. The result? A rich, earthy flavour with a hint of umami, and a powerful boost for your body and mind. Matcha is often drunk as a tea, but is now also popular in lattes, baked goods and even cocktails.

Where does matcha come from?

Matcha actually has its roots in China, but became famous in Japan during the Zen tea ceremonies. Japanese matcha comes from regions like Uji and Nishio, known for their lush, green tea fields. Common beginner mistakes with matcha

  1. Using water that is too hot - this will burn the matcha and make it bitter

  2. No Sifting - Lumps in your latte? Sifting prevents that

  3. Using too much powder - more is not always better; 1 gram is often enough

  4. Not using a proper whisk - a regular whisk will not produce a nice foam

Small adjustments make a world of difference, practice makes perfect foam art!
