August 20 is World Mosquito Day. Not to honor those bastards, but to oppose them. Because mosquitoes... they really don't help us! Dalai Lama once said it very aptly: "If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito." Everyone measures exactly what they are talking about. Mosquitoes are annoying and unfortunately can also be fatal. That's why we pay attention to how you can fight these annoying creatures.
Deadly?
Certainly, the mosquito is by far the deadliest animal in the world. The malaria mosquito (Anopheles maculipennis) is the best known and deadliest. The parasite that the mosquito spreads causes about half a million victims every year, mainly in Africa. But not only this mosquito, other species also spread dozens of diseases with ease.
Punctured
Fortunately, for us here in the Netherlands, mosquitoes are mainly annoying. If you live close to freshwater then you are out of luck, because the above mentioned people also like to live there. Last summer holiday, like every year, we stayed for a week in a house with friends. The house had a beautiful garden complete with swimming pool and... large frog pond. You guessed it: mosquitoes all over the place. We spent a number of nights hunting until the early hours, but our son still suffered a serious puncture.
Nothing to be happy about. Here are some tips against mosquitoes, for a good night's sleep and to prevent hives.
Tip 1 - Mosquito net
Drape a mosquito net around your bed and keep those mosquitoes (and spiders) at bay. Mirjam also gave this tip to sleep better. Check out the blog post: 5 Useful sleeping tips for restless sleepers . In the case of mosquitoes, this works if you keep the bastards out, but the 'bed tent' you create with it also gives you a feeling of security. You can get a nice double mosquito net for less than €30. TravelMore - €29.99
Tip 2 - Use citronella
Citronella aroma has a fresh citrus scent and is known for its anti-mosquito effect. There are many products with citronella, such as Hibi 10 minutes aroma citronella for example. Perfect for sizzling summer evenings on your balcony or garden. But it is also ideal to light before you go to sleep. Then you can immediately read a few pages in a book and dream away. maison KOOS - €10,-
Tip 3 - Kill 'em with... a lamp
Mosquitoes can make you mad, but luckily there's a lot you can do to prevent the misery. Also very effective: screens on windows and doors, using sprays with DEET, a fan aimed at your bed and mosquito lamps. With a good mosquito lamp you will no longer be bothered by annoying buzzing around your head. The anti-mosquito lamp not only attracts mosquitoes, but also other insects, so you can sleep worry-free! Tikkens - €39.99
So I hope that you can still sleep wonderfully in the last tail of the summer without buzzing and prodding. Good night!
