Loneliness is a growing problem in our society. Young and old can sometimes feel lonely, even in the most everyday places, such as a cafรฉ or restaurant. But in the HEMA in Ommen, something special has been devised for this: the 'In je eendje' initiative. A simple rubber duck on the table makes the difference here and brings people together. This heartwarming idea deserves to be expanded nationwide!

Combating loneliness with a rubber duck

The idea is as simple as it is ingenious. Visitors to the HEMA restaurant in Ommen can pick up a small rubber duck upon entering and place it on their table. This cheerful, yellow duck is a signal to others: โ€œI am open to a chat!โ€ This makes it easier to meet new people and have spontaneous conversations.

The concept lowers the threshold for social contact in a playful way. People who might normally sit alone are given the opportunity to connect. This not only helps against loneliness, but also makes a restaurant visit a bit more fun.

Why does this work so well?

Loneliness is not always visible. People can feel just as alone in a busy city as in a deserted place. Often people do need social contact, but they do not dare to start a conversation.

The rubber duck breaks the ice. Because it is a clear but friendly symbol, it feels natural and approachable to join someone with a duck on the table. This simple gesture creates an inviting atmosphere and encourages spontaneous interactions.

HEMA, bring this to all of the Netherlands!

The success in Ommen shows how effective this concept is. And how great would it be if this were available in all HEMA restaurants in the Netherlands? By deploying these little ducks throughout the country, HEMA can make a positive contribution to combating loneliness.

Not only the elderly can benefit from this, but also young people, expats or people who have just moved to a new city. Everyone needs a spontaneous chat or a nice meeting sometimes.

Ik vind het een sympathiek initiatief! Ik hoop alleen dat mensen zich niet nog eenzamer gaan voelen als ze een eendje hebben neergezet, en er niemand bij komt zitten.
