We often only wear a part of our wardrobe and a lot of it ends up lying around or in the trash. That's a shame when we consider that denim in particular is a sturdy and versatile material that we can easily 'upcycle'. With a little inspiration and some skill, you can transform a worn-out pair of jeans or denim jacket into a new item or decoration. Curious how? Then read on quickly.

1 - Stylish denim bag

A first option is to make a sturdy bag from leftover jeans. Denim is a sturdy material and is therefore very suitable for making a bag. To do this, cut off the legs of an old pair of jeans and use this fabric to make the shoulder bag or shopper. To give the bag more space, you can use the pockets of the jeans as extra storage compartments. Sew them on the outside, or on the inside so that you have a handy extra compartment. You can also make the bag even more fun by using different colors of denim or adding other nice fabrics. This creates a unique and sustainable bag.

2 - Upcycled denim jeans

Not only can you give your own bag a new item, you can also brighten up your fashion collection with cool denim fabrics. To do this, cut square or rectangular pieces of fabric from various old jeans and sew them together as a kind of patchwork pattern. This gives a fun and playful look and gives your interior a special look anyway. This is another example of dealing sustainably with the things you own. Do you still want to buy something new, for your interior or wardrobe? Then preferably choose quality denim jeans.

3 - Denim storage baskets

Finally, you can use old jeans to make sturdy storage baskets for magazines, toys or accessories. To make this, cut fabric into long strips that you then braid to make a sturdy basket. To sew the bottom closed, you can use the tuck of the jeans. Finally, use a piece of cardboard to provide the bottom with stability.

4 - Sashiko: the art of visible restoration

Last but not least: sashiko. Do you have a pair of jeans with a tear that’s just a little too big to wear casually? Try sashiko , a traditional Japanese embroidery technique that’s perfect for repairing and embellishing denim. Using contrasting embroidery threads, you create decorative stitches in geometric patterns, giving a damaged garment a second life while still looking stylish. The beauty of sashiko is that you don’t have to be a sewing expert—the technique is all about repetition and simplicity. Plus, it adds an authentic, handmade touch to your favorite pair of jeans or jackets. A sustainable and mindful alternative to throwing away!
